Our Research Areas
DDI’s research examines the ethical, social, economic and legal implications of artificial intelligence, algorithmic systems and digital technologies. Our work is interdisciplinary, drawing on relevant perspectives from the social sciences, law, ethics and technology.
Our current research is organised around three interconnected areas: Digital Platforms & Governance, Digital Technologies, Rights & Inclusion, and Algorithmic Decision-Making.
DIGITAL PLATFORMS & GOVERNANCE
Examines how digital platforms operate, exercise influence and are governed, including the social, economic and institutional implications of different governance arrangements.
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES, RIGHTS & INCLUSION
Examines legal, ethical and societal questions arising from digital technologies, including privacy, accessibility, participation, equality and inclusion across different contexts.
ALGORITHMIC DECISION-MAKING
Examines how automated and algorithmic systems make or support decisions, including questions concerning transparency, fairness, accountability, oversight and their implications for individuals and organisations.

It enables deeper inquiry into the assumptions, structures and institutional contexts that shape how technologies are developed, used and understood.
DDI undertakes interdisciplinary foundational research to contribute to knowledge across digital ethics, artificial intelligence and digital society. We make useful findings publicly accessible through research publications, evidence reviews and educational resources.
